Hubei Industrial Polytechnic is a public full-time institute. The predecessor of the institute is Shiyan Higher Teacher Specialized Class (referred to as Higher Teacher Class) which was opened in 1976 and Shiyan Vocational University which was established in 1983. Over the past 50 years, the institute has been passing on the torch and making progress, cultivating, and conveying a batch of technical backbones, industry experts and management elites, and making positive contributions to the economic and social development of the country and the region. Currently, the institution covers an area of more than 1,000 acres, with 581 active faculty members, more than 500 part-time teachers, and more than 17,000 full-time students.

The institute adheres to the school running philosophy of “serving the regional economy, promoting industrial upgrading, and guaranteeing the development of teachers and students”, deeply promotes the integration between industry and education, and school-enterprise cooperation, closely buttresses the industry of Hubei Province, and fully serves the industrial development system of Shiyan City, which is “one main, four excellent and multi-supportive”. According to the needs of the society, the professional structure is constantly optimized, and seven professional colleges are set up, including the College of Automobile Engineering, the College of Electromechanical Engineering, the College of Tourism and Commerce, the College of Intelligent Engineering, the College of Ecology and Environment, the College of Architecture and Engineering, and the College of Art and Design, with the focus on creating seven key professional clusters (including 51 majors), such as the automobile, intelligent manufacturing, the new generation of information technology, ecological and environmental protection, modern services, architecture, and art and design. The structure of majors in each cluster is more reasonable, the development of majors is basically balanced, and the advantages of clusters are initially formed.

The institute vigorously promotes the integration between industry and education, school-enterprise cooperation, forming a campus + industrial park “dual-park fusion” mode of school running, the existing more than 10 enterprises stationed on campus, school-enterprise cooperation in the construction of 10 productive training bases. School-land school-enterprise cooperation has built a school-land school-enterprise cooperation school platform such as Bamboo Mountain Turquoise Industry College, Fangxian Yellow Wine Industry College, Yunxi Tianhe Culture and Tourism Industry College, Wisdom Environmental Protection Industry College, etc., which is committed to the cultivation and revitalization of the local industry, and has initially formed the pattern of schooling that “a professional group leads a characteristic industry in a county, and a team supports a brand of high-quality products”. The institute has established close cooperation with more than 300 large and medium-sized enterprises such as Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle, Dongfeng Honda, etc. It has set up the “Sino-German Experimental Class of Vocational Education in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering”, and jointly with the German Hans Saidel Foundation, it has set up the “Sino-German Class of Mechanical Technician”. The institute also took the lead in launching the “Qinba Regional Higher Vocational Education Forum”, which was joined by 20 higher vocational institutes in the neighboring regions of Hubei, Chongqing, Shanxi, and Sichuan. Leading the establishment of the Hubei Automobile Service Vocational Education Group, the Shiyan Modern Manufacturing and Service Industry Vocational Education Group, the Shiyan Municipal Industry and Education Consortium and the Shiyan Vocational Institutes Civic and Political Education Alliance. It has great influence in Hubei and the adjoining areas of Hubei, Henan, Shanxi, and Chongqing, and has a certain degree of popularity in China and Germany, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

Through the construction, the institution has made remarkable achievements, and has become a model higher vocational institution in Hubei Province, a national model (backbone) higher vocational institution, and a pilot unit of modern apprenticeship system under the Ministry of Education, Sino-German Vocational Education Automotive Mechatronics Cooperation Program Institutions, National Industry-Education Integration Program Schools, the first batch of pilot institutions of Hubei Province for the cultivation of talents in the field of higher education and undergraduate education, the pilot school of Hubei Province for the diagnosis and improvement of teaching work, and a high-quality specialized higher vocational institution of Hubei Province.
